Teacher drowns saving bride on honeymoon in Egypt

Luke Day, a teacher, drowned after "sacrificing himself" to save the life of his bride when a violent storm capsized their boat while they were on honeymoon in Egypt.

Mr Day, 31, and his wife Dr Sophie Nicholson-Cole were sheltering under the foredeck of a traditional felucca sailing boat after the freak storm blew up at night.

The boat quickly became swamped with water due to the heavy rain and waves whipped up by gale-force winds on the River Nile at Aswan.

Mr Day who was a French teacher at Costessey High School near Norwich aion kina, Norfolk, pushed his wife and two other holidaymakers to safety out of a hatch on the deck.

He then tried to save himself and became trapped and drowned as the wooden boat capsized at its mooring in the early hours of Monday.

Dr Nicholson-Cole, 31 cheap aion gold, a research scientist and climate change expert, spent three hours in the muddy water, repeatedly diving down to try and reach him before his body was recovered.

Her father David Nicholson-Cole said: "Luke was helping Sophie and everyone else out of the hatch as the boat started to go down aion gold. He was the last to try and get out and unfortunately he didn't make it. He basically sacrificed himself to save everyone else including my daughter.

"It was a completely selfless act and was entirely in character. They were a golden couple and were just so in love. She was a beautiful girl and he was handsome and caring buy aion gold."

The couple married last April and began an extended honeymoon in August when they spent nearly five months cycling 2,800 miles by tandem and conventional cycles across Europe to Istanbul.

They returned home for Christmas and then decided to complete their honeymoon by leaving for a month long sight-seeing tour of Egypt on New Years Day buy aion kina.

The couple travelled around by bus and had booked themselves on a two day cruise on a 35 foot long felucca boat from Aswan to Luxor which was due to start on Monday.

Mr Nicholson-Cole of Nottingham said cheap aion kina: "The boats are very basic and you sleep and eat on a deck. Sailing on them is a fantastic experience which hundreds of people do in complete safety every year.

"They were sleeping on the boat on the Sunday night before their cruise started when his freak storm blew up and caused incredible damage in an area where it hardly ever rains.

"It was like an extraordinary twister which came out of the desert at about 3am aion money. It was so severed that it destroyed dozens of houses. They were sheltering under the foredeck while they were battered with this torrential rain which flattened the Nile buy aion money.

"Within two minutes the water went from being completely flat to having metre-high waves which started swamping these wooden boats.

"They had to scramble out of the hatch. Luke was helping everyone - but he just didn't make it. There would have been ropes and obstacles on the boat and he must have got caught up as it went under."

The two other holidaymakers saved by Mr Day aion kina cheap, a teacher for six years, are believed to have been from India and Canada.

Mr Nicholson-Cole said: "Sophie spent three hours in the water trying to get him out and ended up bedraggled and covered in mud. She kept on gulping down the toxic water and it made her ill

"Many people were just standing around like spectators as she was in the water aion kina. They were staring at this poor girl weeping over her husband's body after he was dragged out and brought ashore."

Mr Nicholson-Cole said his daughter was given a lift to a local hotel by an ambulance cheap aion kina, but found it had no power so she could not contact anyone.

She was still bedraggled and covered in mud when she went to try and get help from two cruise ships, but was turned away aion gold.

Finally some UK passengers on a third boat took pity on her and allowed her to make calls and wash in their cabin.

Mr Nicholson-Cole added: "Everything my daughter and husband had was lost during the night - but during the day their passports, money, bags buy aion gold, camera and clothes were washed up on the shore and recovered by local people who handed them in."

"These were people who had nothing and their own houses had been destroyed - but they still wanted to hand in these possessions. It was incredibly kind. In contrast the Egyptian police treated Sophie disgracefully buy aion kina. They questioned her at length afterwards and treated her as if she had murdered him."

Mr Nicholson-Cole said his daughter had been left "traumatised and devastated" by her husband's death and had since returned to the UK cheap aion kina.

He praised the BMI flight crew who moved her into a first class seat because she was so upset as she flew back to Britain alone.

Mr Day was acting head of languages at 980-pupil Costessey High School and ran the school's French exchange programme to Foix aion money. He was due to return to the school next month after being given secondment for his extended honeymoon.

His wife was a research associate at the School of Environmental Studies at the University of East Anglia where she did a phd on communicating climate change and co-wrote a book about how small islands can survive global warming

She left the university in October 2008 and became a climate change and coastal erosion researcher for the global engineering company WS Atkins buy aion money. She had been promised her job back on her return.

Philip May, Costessey High School headteacher, said Mr Day had taught at the school for four years.

He added: "He was charming, witty, enthusiastic and very, very friendly. He came to us as a good teacher and was becoming better aion kina cheap. He was a lively teacher who managed his classes well. The kids loved him. He was always hard-working and enthusiastic.

"His death is a big loss to school. It is a terrible time. Some of the pupils burst into tears when we told them that he had died."

McCain's Wife, Daughter Back Gay Marriage Movement

Cindy McCain, the wife of 2008 Republican presidential nominee John McCain, and their daughter Meghan have posed for photos endorsing pro-gay marriage forces in California.

Mrs. McCain appears with silver duct tape across her mouth and "NOH8" written on one cheek in a photo posted Wednesday to the Web site of NOH8 aion kina, a gay rights group opposed to Proposition 8. The ballot measure passed by California voters in 2008 bans same-sex marriage.

The McCains' daughter Meghan, who has been outspoken in her support for gay rights, has also endorsed NOH8 aion kina cheap. She appears with silver duct tape across her mouth and "NOH8" on a cheek in a photo on her Twitter site.

Cindy McCain contacted NOH8 and offered to pose for the photo endorsement cheap aion gold, the Web site said.

John McCain's office said in a statement that the Arizona senator respects the views of members of his family but remains opposed to gay marriage.

"Sen aion gold. McCain believes the sanctity of marriage is only defined as between one man and one woman," the statement said.

John McCain backed an Arizona ballot measure passed by voters in 2008 that defined marriage as between one man and one woman.

The NOH8 Web site praised Cindy McCain's willingness to publicly endorse a cause that is unpopular within the Republican Party buy aion gold.

"The McCains are one of the most well-known Republican families in recent history, and for Mrs. McCain to have reached out to us to offer her support truly means a lot," the site says.

"Although we had worked with Meghan McCain before and were aware of her own position buy aion kina, we'd never really thought the cause might be something her mother would get behind. We have a huge amount of respect for both of these women for being brave enough to make it known they support equal marriage rights for all Americans."

Meghan McCain said Wednesday in a Twitter message linked to her blog cheap aion kina: "I couldn't be more proud of my mother for posing for the NOH8 campaign. I think more Republicans need to start taking a stand for equality."

Meghan McCain was asked to be the keynote speaker at next month's National Equality Week at George Washington University in Washington for her advocacy aion money, but her appearance has drawn criticism from Republicans on campus, the NOH8 site said.

McCain's Senate re-election campaign said Wednesday that his presidential running mate, former Alaska Gov buy aion money. Sarah Palin, will come to Arizona to campaign for him in March. Palin has been a vocal opponent of gay marriage.

12 ways to bring back the heat¡ªtonight!

Hot. Thrilling. When was the last time you used words like that to describe your relationship? "Once you move out of the infatuation phase, the spice usually starts to fade," says author and sex therapist Ian Kerner, PhD. In a recent Woman's Day poll dofus kamas, 38 percent of you said the thrill has fizzled from your relationship. So what can you do to bring back that strong, intense connection? Read on for great tips from relationship experts and real women on how to ignite the spark again buy dofus kamas. Grab your pen and pad of paper¡ªyou'll want to take notes.

Share a 20-Second Hug

When you embrace your man, how long do you usually stay entwined? A few seconds acheter dofus kamas? Next time, hold on a bit longer. "When you hug for at least 20 seconds, it increases levels of [the hormone] oxytocin in both men and women and makes you feel closer," says Dr. Kerner.

Clean Out Your Bedroom

It's the place where you time spend alone with your partner dofus kama, but there may be roadblocks to seduction. Get rid of the family pictures on the dresser. Sexologist and relationship expert Logan Levkoff explains that seeing a picture of your children or mother-in-law could definitely ruin the moment¡ªor prevent you from getting in the mood in the first place. Also, consider saying goodbye to the television dofus gold. "If you have 700 channels, it gives you 700 excuses to avoid being intimate," says Logan.

Send a Love Note

Handwritten love letters may be a thing of the past, but that doesn¡¯t mean you shouldn¡¯t express your love via written communication. Sometimes it¡¯s easier than saying it aloud. "Make it a priority to send a sweet email acheter des dofus kamas, sexy text message or some other little gesture on a weekly basis," says sexologist and author Yvonne Fulbright, PhD.

Tell Him Exactly What You Want

You can¡¯t be upset that your husband never gives you a massage if you don't tell him you want one. "A reason men don¡¯t do things is because they fear getting it wrong," says Logan. "Women have to understand that men feel pressured dofus kamas." Make it easier by sharing with your significant other the things you like¡ªand dislike.

Be Unpredictable

"Long-term relationships are based on trust, dependability and predictability," says Dr. Kerner. That's great when it comes to finances and raising a family, but in the bedroom¡ªnot so much. Mystery can create the romance you're missing buy dofus kamas. "Sometimes I tell my husband to expect a 'surprise' after the kids go to bed. The anticipation alone keeps him excited all day long," says Eunice Carreira of Kaneohe, Hawaii.

Engage in a Heart-Pumping Activity

If you're looking for a great date idea for Valentine's Day or any other day, consider an adrenaline-pumping activity such as skiing, snowboarding or skydiving acheter dofus kamas. According to Dr. Kerner, adrenaline makes the heart grow fonder by boosting dopamine in the brain. (Dopamine is the same feel-good hormone that is released after sex.)

Have Sex Without the "Sex" Part

Sometimes too much emphasis is placed on the actual act of sex dofus gold. "Sex happens not just in the body, but also in the mind," says Dr. Kerner. "Not actually having intercourse can make the experience more creative and fun." Kissing, touching and fooling around can sometimes be just as enjoyable.

Leave Arguments Outside

"What happens outside the bedroom usually affects what happens inside the bedroom acheter des dofus kamas," says Dr. Kerner. If you and your mate have a spat, it may be wise to repair the argument before you go to bed. Dr. Kerner also suggests making a joke or giving your partner a kiss if you feel a conversation is headed toward a disagreement.

Stroke His Ego

"Find out what your man wants and do it for him," says Logan. Affirm his self-esteem with a compliment or by doing something special dofus kamas. "I tell my husband that he is the sexiest man I know as often as possible. I want him to know that he is still that hot guy I thought he was when we first met," says Beth Pisano of Hutchinson, Kansas.

Indulge in Yourself

"Women tend to place everyone else before them, often putting their self-care on a back burner," says Dr. Fulbright buy dofus kamas. "The more a woman looks after her health and welfare¡ªfor example, the more she exercises¡ªthe better she will feel and the more she'll be in the mood for sex." Dr. Kerner suggests that women dress up for themselves: Once you like the way you look acheter dofus kamas, you'll feel sexy and confident, and that alone will get your heart pumping.

Revisit the Honeymoon Days

No, you don't have to start pulling out the old wedding albums and get all teary-eyed. Instead recall the fun times you and your mate had when you were still a hot, new item and incorporate them into your relationship today. What made you laugh dofus kama? What did the two of you enjoy doing the most? "My husband and I go to sci-fi and comic conventions together, which gives us plenty of fodder for being geeky together," says Shari Lipkin of Watertown, Massachusetts dofus dold. "His silliness is what attracted me in the first place!"

7 Ways to Revive Your Marriage

See what the experts wish you¡¯d do for your ho-hum relationship

We¡¯ve all been there¡ªyour marriage is OK acheter des dofus kamas, but not great. You¡¯re fighting with your spouse or, worse yet, not talking at all. And sex? Forget it. If you¡¯re wondering what happened to your marriage, we¡¯ve got the fix. Here, marriage counselors and therapists weigh in on great ways to make you and your husband fall in love¡ªand like¡ªagain.

Just Do It!

If you haven¡¯t had sex in forever, or feel like you and your husband are like roommates dofus kamas, push yourself to the bedroom. ¡°I wish I had a dollar for each time a woman in my practice said, ¡®I really wasn't in the mood when my husband approached me, but once we got into it, I enjoyed myself a lot,¡¯¡± says Michele Weiner-Davis, MSW, bestselling author. For many women, sexual desire doesn't just happen¡ªyou have to make it happen buy dofus kamas. ¡°Unlike your more highly sexed spouse, who feels desire before arousal, your body needs to be stimulated before your brain signals that you are turned on,¡± Weiner-Davis says. Think of it like exercising: The hardest part is putting on your sneakers acheter dofus kamas.

Attack the Problem, Not the Person

When you argue, using ¡°you¡± statements¡ª¡°You didn¡¯t do x and you should have done y¡± just ratchets up the stress level. All your spouse hears is ¡°you, you, you¡±¡ª which causes more anger, defensiveness and division. Talk about the problem instead and use ¡°I¡± statements when saying how it makes you feel dofus kama, advises Dr. Scott Haltzman, MD, author of The Secrets of Happy Families. And if you can do it calmly, all the better.

Praise Your Husband¡ªEven If You Don¡¯t Feel Like It

¡°People are deeply attracted to people who are interested in them and appreciate them dofus gold,¡± says Dr. Haltzman. ¡°So shower your partner with interest and adoration, and he or she will keep turning to you to be the center of his or her life.¡± You also might want to make a list of all the positive things your partner does for you and your relationship acheter des dofus kamas, says Terri Orbuch, PhD (a.k.a. The Love Doctor), author of the upcoming 5 Simple Steps to Take Your Marriage from Good to Great.

Slow Down

Slowing down your morning routine and just noticing what your partner is wearing can help you get back on track dofus kamas, says Dr. Orbach. ¡°This small behavioral change resets your brain to change speed. You begin to notice your partner, his behaviors, his patterns, his life.¡±

Talk

It sounds so basic, but talking often gets lost in the bustle of everyday life buy dofus kamas. Spend 10 minutes a day (every day!) with your spouse, talking about something other than work, family or who does what around the house. If you don¡¯t know where to start, bring up something you saw that day or something you were thinking about acheter dofus kamas.

Bring Back the Fun

¡°Just like you make work fun, or make that five-hour trip to your parents¡¯ house fun, add new dimensions to your marriage, change things up, add new adventure,¡± says Dr. Haltzman. Your goal: one or two new things a month dofus kama. Some ideas: Take a class together, play paintball or even speak pig Latin to each other for a day. ¡°Get back to things that turned each of you on when you were dating¡ªincluding the flowers, picking her up at the front doorstep and taking the car parking dofus gold,¡± he says.

Act Married and Stick It Out

Don't stray. ¡°Fidelity isn't for sissies,¡± says Weiner-Davis. ¡°People think if they are unhappy, that there is a problem in their marriage. But up to 80 percent of individuals consider divorce at some time,¡± says Dr. Haltzman. There is little difference acheter des dofus kamas, he says, between couples who divorce and those who stick it out. ¡°The real difference is the ones who stuck it out have moved past the problem and have moved ahead to feel closer¡ªin no small part because they went through the rough spot together.¡±

Is Google Now Apple¡¯s Greatest Enemy?

Let¡¯s take a trip back in time. The year is 1994, and two tech giants are going to war over copyright. They are Microsoft and Apple, and they are fighting over a copyright claim by Apple over Microsoft and HP¡¯s use of graphical user interface elements from the Macintosh OS Dungeon Fighter gold. The resulting court case, Apple Computer, Inc. v. Microsoft Corporation, ended with a ruling in Microsoft¡¯s favor, mostly due to a contractual license agreement between the two.

The matter was never fully settled by the case though. Instead, negotiations that took place several years later resulted in the two companies agreeing to make Internet Explorer Mac¡¯s default browser Dungeon Fighter money. Microsoft also agreed to keep developing Office for the Mac. Most importantly though, Microsoft invested $150 million into Apple to keep it afloat.

This series of events, which happened while Steve Jobs was being reinstated as the CEO of Apple, set the stage for what is happening today between Microsoft, Apple, and Google (Google) cheap Dungon Fighter gold. While Microsoft and Apple are still bitter rivals, several recent events have inadvertently brought them closer together in order to fight their common enemy: Google.

The phrase ¡°the enemy of my enemy is my friend¡± comes to mind. Let¡¯s explore how we got to this tipping point.

Android: Google Enters Apple¡¯s Turf

When Google CEO Eric Schmidt joined Apple¡¯s Board of Directors in 2006 cheap DFO gold, the move made perfect sense. Here¡¯s what Apple said about Eric in its original announcement:

¡°Eric¡¯s 20 years of experience as an Internet strategist, entrepreneur and technologist give him a well-seasoned perspective which perfectly complements Google¡¯s needs as a young and rapidly growing company with a unique corporate culture.¡±

At that time, Google wasn¡¯t in mobile Dungeon Fighter gold, hardware, operating systems or browsers. Now Google is directly competing with Apple through the Nexus One, Google Chrome, Chrome OS, and even possibly in the tablet computer space.

It all started with Android (Android), though. Back in August 2007, details began to leak about Google building a mobile OS or even a GPhone. It turned out to be Android, the open-source mobile OS that is now the fastest growing smartphone OS on the market.

At first Dungeon Fighter money, Android didn¡¯t pose much of a threat, but as more phones utilized the software, the relationship between Google and Apple became very uncomfortable. Eric Schmidt sat out board meetings discussing the iPhone due to conflict of interest, but the relationship only eroded from there.

Watershed Moment: Eric Schmidt Resigns from Apple¡¯s Board

Tensions between the two companies grew worse after Apple rejected Google Voice as an app on the iPhone.

The resulting FCC inquiry cheap Dungoen Fighter gold, along with an FTC investigation and the announcement of Google Chrome OS were just too much. On August 3, 2009, Eric Schmidt resigned from Apple¡¯s Board of Directors.

In retrospect, this was the moment when Apple, Google and the rest of the world realized that the two companies could no longer be allies. Google¡¯s expanding interest outside of search was pouring over into Apple¡¯s domain on multiple fronts cheap DFO gold. With the search giant free of its Apple association, it could go all-out on its agenda to bring more people onto the web for longer (read the Google Revenue Equation to learn why).

The culmination of the breaking of the Google-Apple alliance? It was the release of the Nexus One, a direct competitor to Apple¡¯s lucrative iPhone.

Recent Events Dungeon Fighter gold: Apple and Microsoft Talk Bing

Yesterday we learned that Apple and Microsoft are in talks to make Bing (Bing) the default search engine for the iPhone. While we¡¯ve heard this rumor before, the talk seems to be heating up. Most of our readers expressed their dismay or shock over the potential deal Dungeon Fighter money, some questioning why Apple would ever team up with Microsoft over Google.

Really though, the deal makes perfect sense, given the new competitive landscape. Earlier today, Jim Goldman at CNBC provided some interesting new information on the dynamics of the Apple-Google-Microsoft relationship cheap Dungon Fighter gold. According to his source, Steve Jobs hates Eric Schmidt (it wouldn¡¯t surprise us) and Microsoft is offering a bigger cut of iPhone search revenues than Google.

While Microsoft and Apple¡¯s relationship grew cold after the Redmond, WA, company bailed Apple Computer out, it never vanished. Moreover, Steve knows that he can work with Microsoft, especially if it helps Microsoft hurt Google.

Android has become the de facto alternative to the iPhone (iPhone) OS, and the Nexus One is closest thing yet to a smartphone that can stand up to the iPhone¡¯s dominance. While Microsoft and Apple are still in competition over Mac vs. PC cheap DFO gold, Apple clearly believes that its future isn¡¯t just in computers, but in other Internet devices such as the iPhone and the fabled Apple Tablet. Microsoft poses far less of a threat in these areas than Google does.

It¡¯s time to call it: Google is now Apple¡¯s greatest enemy. Soon Google will be entering its OS turf with Chrome OS. Apple increasingly sees Google as a major competitor over the next few years. While the company Steve built doesn¡¯t particularly like Microsoft, it knows that it has to work with the lesser of two evils in order to succeed.

Say hello to the new dynamic. It¡¯s Apple + Microsoft vs. Google. May the new battle begin.

Exolanguage: do you speak alien?

THE cosmos is quiet. Eerily quiet. After decades of straining our radio ears for a whisper of civilisations beyond Earth, we have heard nothing. No reassuring message of universal peace. No helpful recipe for building faster-than-light spacecraft or for averting global catastrophes Dragon Oath gold. Not even a stray interstellar advertisement.

Perhaps there's nobody out there after all. Or perhaps it's just early days in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), and we're listening to the wrong star systems or at the wrong wavelengths.

There is another possibility, says Douglas Vakoch Dragon Oath golds, head of the Interstellar Message Composition programme at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California, which ponders the question of how we should communicate with aliens. "Maybe everyone's listening but no one is transmitting cheap Dragon Oath gold. Maybe it takes an audacious young civilisation like ours to do that."

So should we start sending messages into the void? And if so, how can we make ourselves understood to beings we know nothing about?

One astronomer has already stepped up to the challenge cheap Dragon Oath golds. Alexander Zaitsev at the Russian Academy of Science's Institute of Radio Engineering and Electronics in Moscow has sent four interstellar messages since 1999, each beamed to no more than a handful of nearby sun-like stars buy Dragon Oath gold. Zaitsev's efforts are pretty small scale, however, and so far his group is more or less alone except for some low-power operations offering to send your message to the stars for a fee.

Read more: Earth calling: A short history of radio messages to ET

That could be about to change. Perhaps bored with spending so long hearing nothing Dragon Oath money, the wider SETI community is starting to consider a more active approach. They will get together to discuss whether to go for it at a meeting in April in League City, Texas. Vakoch, who will chair these sessions, is all in favour. "I have long held the position that after broad-based international consultation, we should be doing active SETI," he says.

It's an approach that worries ex-astronomer and science fiction author David Brin cheap Dragon Oath money, who was a member of the International Academy of Astronautics SETI panel until 2006. He resigned when the committee backtracked on the wording of a protocol that called for discussion before deliberately broadcasting into space. "I dislike seeing my children's destiny being gambled with by a couple of dozen arrogant people who cling to one image of the alien Dragon Oath gold," says Brin. Since then three other members have quit for similar reasons. Vakoch has some sympathy with Brin's point of view. "These issues are much too important and too complex to be resolved after only a few days of discussion."

If the enthusiasts for active SETI get their way and there is a real effort to send a message, the next question is: what should we say?

Some early attempts to communicate with aliens - including the plaques attached to NASA's Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft Dragon Oath golds, and the phonograph records on the Voyager probes - were really only symbolic efforts. More likely to be received one day is the powerful radio broadcast devised by SETI pioneer Frank Drake and sent from the Arecibo telescope in Puerto Rico in 1974 cheap Dragon Oath gold. We have a long wait for contact if we rely on this, though: the message won't reach the distant star cluster it was aimed at, M13, for 25,000 years. It was also a very brief message, containing only 210 bytes of information.

"These are greeting cards," says Seth Shostak, who is a senior astronomer at the SETI Institute. "It is nice to get a greeting card, but hard to decipher if it's in a language you don't understand cheap Dragon Oath golds, because the amount of material is so limited."

Interstellar geek speak

Although the Arecibo message is cunningly constructed, it is difficult even for a human to understand. The signal contains a series of 1679 bits, a number chosen as it is equal to the product of two prime numbers - 23 and 73. The hope is this will prompt an acute alien recipient to arrange the 1s and 0s into a 23-by-73 rectangle buy Dragon Oath gold. Doing so reveals a rather complicated picture, which is supposed to give some basic information about our chemical and biological make-up, our civilisation and the solar system (see illustration).

To me it looks a bit like a small person with a big head, four eyes and eight bushy eyebrows. So the only bit I've got right is the "person", and there I had a big advantage Dragon oath money. "It is much worse if you don't have lot of context, if you don't even know about Homo sapiens," says Shostak.

So where might we find some common ground with ET? Perhaps in mathematics. This idea goes back about three centuries cheap Dragon Oath money, when it was suggested that we could hail beings on the moon by cutting a diagram of Pythagoras's theorem into the forests of Siberia.

In 1960, Dutch mathematician Hans Freudenthal proposed an interspecies language called Lincos that starts with simple mathematical statements - a series of beeps to represent 1 + 1 = 2 for example. It then uses these to define logical relationships, eventually building up to more complex concepts of time and space.

More recently in the 1990s, mathematician Carl DeVito and linguist Robert Oehrle, both then at the University of Arizona in Tucson, made an attempt to speed up this process by assuming that respondents have some knowledge of physical concepts karos carat. In DeVito's scheme, once some mathematical and logical symbols have been defined, we would launch into a description of the periodic table, and then discuss energy in terms of specific heats of the elements and so on karos gold. They argue that any civilisation capable of receiving our radio signals must have some knowledge of physics to build radio receivers.

While interstellar geek-speak might be fine for sending details of your solar system and the latest technology, it's not so easy to move on to more abstract ideas, such as human nature and culture cheap karos golds. How would you convey a simple sentiment like "we come in peace"?

How do you convey a simple sentiment like 'we come in peace' to an alien species?

"It seems that sooner or later one must fall back on pictures cheap karos carat," says DeVito. Images might be the only way to convey to an alien what we're talking about, and to show them what our world is like. They wouldn't need to have vision like ours, merely some way to understand spatial patterns in at least two dimensions. Then they could attach symbols to meanings, like a child with a picture book.

And we can do better than "cows go moo" buy karos carat. Paolo Musso, a philosopher at the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome, Italy, has outlined one way to combine mathematics and images to tell a moral tale using the process of analogy. First, arithmetic is used to establish signals that mean right and wrong, defined by sums that are right and wrong buy karos carats. These can then be applied to cartoons showing what we consider to be good and bad actions.

Many of these approaches start with counting, but what if the slimy ones don't have our concept of arithmetic? "There is no guarantee that if ETs have mathematics it will be commensurable with ours," says Vakoch. He and others have instead suggested a more creative channel of communication online karos carats: sending examples of our culture. It is possible, Vakoch says, that aliens will develop a taste for Toulouse-Lautrec paintings or Meade Lux Lewis boogie-woogie numbers, and then we will have done something worthwhile. In 2008 NASA transmitted a song by The Beatles at the star Polaris, while artist Joe Davis has aimed other sounds and messages at two nearby stars.

Zaitsev's longer messages - Cosmic Call 1 and 2 karos carats shop, and Teen Age Message - combine several of these ideas. Each message consists of a beam of radio waves sent from the Evpatoria radio telescope in southern Ukraine, which encoded each bit of information by shifting the transmission frequency slightly up or down. A bit can represent a black or white square karos carat, and a number of them can be built up pixel by pixel into a series of pictures like the original Arecibo message. Some of them form a rather sketchy "bilingual image glossary" - a dozen hand drawings meant to show concepts including people, family, nature and games, with English and Russian words attached karos gold. Zaitsev has also included an excerpt of theremin music to soothe, or perhaps irritate, alien listeners.

Give them porn

But the main content was a series of 127-by-127 pixel images forming the "interstellar Rosetta Stone", developed by astronomers Yvan Dutil and Stephane Dumas from Defence Research and Development Canada in Valcartier, Quebec cheap karos golds. Like Freudenthal's and DeVito's approaches, the images start with arithmetic and build from there. They also include graphs to illustrate physics, as well as sketches of the solar system, Earth's topography and the man and woman from the Pioneer plaque.

As well as these complex signals cheap karos carat, Zaitsev has transmitted a more lightweight message. In "A message from Earth", sent in 2008, contributions from users of social networking site Bebo were directed at a single planetary system around the star Gliese 581. If anyone there is listening, they can expect to receive it in 2029 - followed by 26,000 unsolicited text messages collected by Cosmos magazine and transmitted last year. At 50 to 60 kilobytes buy karos carat, there is more information in the Cosmic Calls than in the Arecibo message, giving alien cryptologists and linguists something to work with. To give them a helping hand, a lot of what has been sent is redundant.

"Redundancy really helps buy karos carats," says Shostak, as it allows a recipient to make a guess about the meaning and then check it, like in a crossword. He suspects that all the polite efforts to be understood might be unnecessary. "A lot of people wonder what we should send. Music, mathematics or pictures? My first thought is it probably doesn't matter online karos carats," he says.

Instead, Shostak suggests that we just gabble. "My conclusion is that you would just send them the Google servers. That's an enormous amount of information, much of it redundant and pictographic. Much of it is pornographic too karos carats shop, but I expect they could handle that." (Although it raises questions like, can Earth handle a trillion orders for Viagra?)

According to Shostak's calculations, sending so much stuff becomes practical if we assume that ET is very good at listening and has the technology to pick up a faint, rapidly changing signal against the background noise of the galaxy. If they have truly vast radio dishes karos carat, then we can send them encyclopedias and even libraries in a sensible amount of time.

Shostak also points out that an interstellar message is quite likely to be a one-way deal: it may not even reach its destination until long after our civilisation has ended. So as this is probably the only chance of telling an alien world about humanity karos gold, we might as well say as much as we can.

Of course, it would be much better if we could actually chat, as this would allow us to gradually teach each other our languages and histories. But interstellar distances make that nigh on impossible unless we can somehow send a representative.

Sociologist William Bainbridge of George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia cheap karos golds, is trying to develop avatars, human personalities encoded in software. If he succeeds, we could send one into deep space, perhaps programmed into an interstellar probe. Or if we can find a way to tell receivers how our software works, we could even send avatars to them via a radio beam.

Whatever we decide, the next problem is where to aim our message cheap karos carat. Broadcasting loudly to the whole sky would use ludicrous amounts of power, far beyond our capabilities today. Instead, active SETI would target promising star systems. A sun-like star is a start; planets are better. Space telescopes such as Kepler should be able to detect planets that are Earth-size buy karos carat, and future telescopes should eventually be able to pick out those with liquid water on the surface and oxygen in their atmospheres.

This still might not be a well-targeted address list, however, because civilisations may be very thinly spread. "Even if you found a list of 10,000 Earth-like worlds buy karos carats, that might not be good enough," says Shostak. "We've had biology for 4 billion years, and radio telescopes for 40 years; that's 1 in 100 million." If the technological window for aliens is as short as ours then we might have to transmit to 100 million Earths before anyone hears us.

For practical reasons online karos carats, Shostak thinks we should wait and listen. "The bottom line is that for the foreseeable future, the only decent targets are people that have contacted you. Let them do the heavy lifting."

In the meantime, planning our own message could help to focus the minds of SETI experts on what kind of communication we should be looking out for karos carats shop. If Earth's efforts are anything to go by, we can expect a basic maths lesson and some pictures of naked aliens.

Pakistani fighter jets have targeted suspected militant hideouts in the Orakzai tribal agency, south-west of Peshawar, killing at least 10 people.

Officials say the dead were militants, but eyewitnesses told the BBC the bombs destroyed the home of a tribal chief, killing three women and four children.

Pakistani troops have been engaged in an major offensive against the Taliban in South Waziristan, further south.

The army believes many insurgents fled from there to areas such as Orakzai. A number of air strikes have targeted militant targets in Orakzai in recent weeks.

The UN says more than 40,000 civilians have left their homes in Orakzai and are in need of humanitarian assistance.

An ancient "dwarf" whale appears to have fed by sucking small animals out of the seafloor mud with its short snout and tongue, experts say.

Researchers say the 25 million-year-old fossil is related to today's blue whales - the largest animals on Earth.

The ancient animal's mud slurping may have been a precursor to the filter feeding seen in modern baleen whales.

These whales strain huge quantities of tiny marine animals through specialised "combs" which take the place of teeth. The research is published in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society.

The fossilised remains of the primitive baleen whale Mammalodon colliveri was discovered near Torquay, in Victoria, Australia.

Turn two health care bills into one

The Senate on Thursday passed its version of the health care bill, inching the country closer to the biggest expansion of medical coverage since Medicare was enacted more than four decades ago.

Senate Democrats declared victory after the 60-39 party line vote, but one of the most complicated tasks is still ahead.

A conference committee must reconcile the differences -- notably a public option, how to pay for the plan that emerges, and coverage for abortion -- and merge them into one.

The House and Senate will then have to pass the revised plan before it can be sent to President Obama's desk. Each chamber needs a simple majority vote for final passage.

A Salvation Army major was shot dead in front of his three children on Christmas Eve in North Little Rock, Arkansas, authorities said.

Maj. Philip Wise, 40, was gunned down Thursday. He was found lying by the back entrance of a Salvation Army facility, said police spokesman Sgt. Terry Kuykendall.

Wise apparently dropped two bell ringers off at home and returned to the Salvation Army building with his three children, ages 4, 6 and 8. Two men carrying handguns approached them and demanded money before shooting Wise, Kuykendall said.

Police received a 911 call at 4:17 p.m. Pulaski County Coroner Garland Camper said Wise's wife, Cindy, made the call from inside the building.
